This is an aerial photograph of the land taken by Dept of Forestry in June, 1991. I have colorized Aerial Photo
June 1991 it to reflect what I know of the ground cover. Click on the photo to alternate between the colored and original photos.

Note that the crease running from east to west is where I glued two photographs together and is not a road.

You will notice on the legend, I listed two different greens for the tree cover, but apparently used only one on the photo. If you click back and forth, you can see that the photo is darker where there are more spruce than poplar. In the wetlands, the darker areas are more prone to be open water. In the fields, the darker areas would be low spots - wetter in the spring leads to more grass growing and a darker color.

I moved here in 1997, and

  • the land has not been broken since before 1997 (except for a couple of garden spots - some of which I have let grow back in)
  • there have been no chemicals used on the land since 1997
  • the hay has not been taken off since 1997 - the grass is being left for future soil quality
  • there are poplar, white spruce, and jack pine growing back along the edges of both fields and here and there in the middle (see the Regeneration Photo Album for some pictures of the regrowth)
  • this land would qualify as organic

  • There are two clearings: 20 acres, 40 acres that were cleared probably more than 50 years ago.
  • The soil is clay sand loam
  • The garden (which has had organic matter introduced since 2000 when it was broken) grows good plant tops (tomatoes and flowers), but doesn't do well with root vegetables (although the garden lilies are getting along fine).
